Hispania ( Ancient Greek: Ἱσπανία, romanized : Hispanía; Latin: Hispānia [hɪsˈpaːnia]; nearly identically pronounced in Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan as [isˈpanja]) was the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula. Under the Roman Republic, Hispania was divided into two provinces: Hispania Citerior and Hispania Ulterior.
